There are 13 total beads on the cord: nine beads are on the bottom and four beads are on top. Most hikers slide one of the bottom beads up for every 10 paces taken. Once the 100^th step is reached, the nine beads near the knot are supposed to slide toward the bottom while one of the beads on top slides upward, away from the knot in the middle. This allows you to keep a precise pace count on your journey.
